The hotel is set high on the end of a ridge with its back to a cliff, looking over the reservoir(Kandalama Tank) to a distant view of Sigiriya Rock.
Originally designed as a 157 room hotel by Geoffrey Bawa in 1994, the refurbishment in 2006, added a roof top spa, convention centre and reduced the rooms numbers to 154
