The Sterling Resort has 81 rooms into which Kaushik Mukerjee wanted to bring the culture and traditions of the “Land of the Gods”. He was inspired by the narrow strips or ‘pattis’ with geometric designs that are woven locally, usually at home, on small looms. These decorative strips are stitched as borders on shawls, bags, and the famous himachali cap. Kaushik commissioned these to create striking bed headboards for the guests in every room. This is because Kaushik believes… “In the process of modernisation, there has been an unconscious assumption that all local techniques, crafts and ways of living are outdated and must be replaced. However, both architecture and design are intrinsically tied to people – and people are a composite of both their past and their present. Spaces that truly reflect this dichotomy will never go out of style.” Kaushik Mukerjee
The Sterling Resorts “White Mist” 3km from Manali was refurbished by Kaushik Mukerjee Architects. The resort has views of the Hampta Pass and the majestic Mount Friendship, also called Friendship Peak, which is a mountain in Himachal Pradesh, India with an altitude of 5,287 metres (17,346 ft) above sea level. The resort has beautiful views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains, which are lined with pine forests and apple orchards. So it was important in the design to have large picture windows bringing the view into the rooms, into reading nooks, and the dining areas.
